Job Title:  Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)                                     

 

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

 

Reports to:  Registered Nurse Assigned/Nursing Department Director      

 

Pay Grade: A07A

 

Dept./School:  Nursing                                                                           

 

Days: 187

 

 

Primary Purpose: The Licensed Vocational School Nurse provides direct services to meet the health and safety needs of the students and staff under the supervision of the RN school nurse and the Director.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

 

  • Valid Texas Vocational Nurses Licenses issued by the Texas Board of Nursing
  • High School diploma and graduation from an accredited Vocational Nurse Training Program
  • AED / CPR certification

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

 

  • Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
  • Ability to use software to develop databases and do word processing
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

 

  • Two (2) or more years’ experience in community health, pediatric nursing or nursing which includes contact with school-age children preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  • Accepts clinical supervision and directions from RN school nurse; accepts general supervision from campus principal.
  • Provides for daily care of students with medical needs in the school setting utilizing health protocols and care plans established by the RN.
  • Provides basic first aid care for minor injuries and illnesses and obtains necessary assistance in cases of serious trauma and /or illness.
  • Accurately administers medications (as ordered by a physician) according to state law and District policy, and recognizes adverse reactions.
  • Maintains accurate, current, complete health records on each student, including
  • individual daily documentation of student care, medications administered, treatments administered, immunization records, health history, screening results, and follow-up information.
  • Assists the parent and RN in development of Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP).
  • Performs screening procedures as required by Texas law, Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Identifies health problems and refers students for further evaluation as necessary and follow up on the referrals to obtain optimum health for each student.
  • Skillfully operates health-related equipment such as blood pressure monitors/cuff, otoscope, audiometer, thermometer, vision and hearing screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, etc.
  • Demonstrates proficient computer skills as well as filing skills.
  • Communicates daily with essential staff and supervising RN any possible communicable diseases, any changes in students’ health status, and any family needs or concerns
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding reporting abuse to the appropriate agency according to state laws and District policy.
  • Reports communicable diseases as required by Ector County Public Health Department.
  • Educates faculty/staff as needed on health-related topics as directed by supervising RN.
  • Provides guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel or other school staff on health-related issues as directed by the supervising RN.
  • Adheres to the Texas Department of State Health Services immunization laws, secure records on each student, update as necessary on student record.
  • Complies with District requirements for Medicaid billing (SHARS).
  • Participates in ARDS and IEP meetings as appropriate (in consultation with supervising RN.
  • Continues to pursue educational opportunities to maintain an optimal level of
  • performance and comply with Board of Nursing LVN license requirements and District requirements.
  • Attends nurse meetings and campus meetings required of staff.
  • Models behavior that is ethical and responsible.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and compliance with the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Serves on campus safety team.
  • Reports potential health and safety hazards to campus principal or campus safety officer.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

 

  • Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
  • Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
  • Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students
  • Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
  • Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
