Job Title: Guidance Apprentice                                                          Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Principal                                                                           Pay Grade: Admin Pay 2

 

Dept. /School: Assigned Campus                                                                              Days: 187

 

Supervises: N/A

 

Primary Purpose: To provide educational guidance to all students.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • Valid State Teaching Certificate (Texas or Out of State required)
  • Accepted and enrolled into a school counseling program (required)
  • In process of obtaining a master’s degree (required)
  • In process of obtaining a Texas school counseling certification (required)

 

Special Knowledge Skills:

  • Thorough understanding of school operations
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to instruct students and promote positive behaviors
  • Experience using technology to improve teaching and learning
  • Excellent knowledge of computer applications (multi-platform preferred)

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of successful teaching experience (required)

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive guidance program as described in Texas Education Code 33 targeting identified student needs at the campus including:

  • Guidance Curriculum:
    • Awareness, skill development and application of the skills of everyday life including: self-confidence, self-efficacy, motivation to achieve, decision-making, goal setting, planning and problem-solving skills, interpersonal effectiveness, social skills, communication skills, cross-cultural effectiveness, responsible behavior and character development.
      • Promote the student's personal, academic, and social growth in the educational setting
      • Assist student in understanding the school rules and developing self-discipline
      • Conduct orientation for pupils new to the building
      • Assist students in transition including transition to middle school and high school
      • Other duties as assigned

 

  • Individual planning and goal setting:
    • Acquisition of skills, awareness of educational opportunities, appropriate course selection, lifelong learning, utilization of test scores, knowledge of potential career opportunities, planning, training and positive work habits, personal-social development of health self-concepts, development of adaptive and adjustive social behavior.
    • Increase the student's knowledge of occupational opportunities and the training programs for each occupation
    • Develop the student's knowledge of the opportunities and requirements of his or her social environment
    • Assist in the implementation of the career education program
    • Other duties as assigned

 

  • Responsive Services, prevention and intervention:  
    • Academic concerns, school related concerns (tardiness, absences & truancy, misbehavior, school-avoidance, drop-out prevention), coping with stress, conflict resolution and anxiety 
    • Provide referrals to community services and agencies as appropriate  
    • Assist in identification of students who would benefit from special programs and services  
    • Assist in an effective referral process for students to access special programs and services  
    • Work with parents and staff on Behavior Intervention Plans 

 

  • System support including program delivery and support:
    • Guidance program planning and development, parent education, teacher/administrator consultation, staff development for educators, school improvement planning, counselors’ professional development, research and publishing, community outreach and public relations.
    • Provide resources and training for faculty and staff to enhance the implementation of the guidance program
    • Educate the school staff, parents, and the community about the guidance program through a public information program
    • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant individuals to enhance the educational experience for students
    • Conduct at least one in-service program in the building for teachers and administrators
    • Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and issues in education
    • Enhance professional development by attending appropriate staff development to meet district requirements including staff development provided by the district, local professional counselor organizations, regional training centers, and/or state counselor conferences.
    • Prepare reports as requested by the Director of Guidance and Counseling
    • Other duties as assigned

Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional prolonged standing or sitting or irregular hours.
