Supervises: School Health Aide or LVN as assigned
Primary Purpose: The registered professional school nurse’s primary purpose is to strengthen the educational process through the improvement of the health status and learning of students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Registered Nurse with academic preparation at the associate or baccalaureate level, BSN preferred.
- Current Texas license issued by the Board of Nurse Examiners.
- Current certification in CPR/AED.
- Maintain certification as a State Screener in Vision, Hearing, Spinal and Risk Assessment of Type 2 Diabetes in Children.
Special Knowledge Skills:
- Nursing care of the school-age child.
- Working knowledge and skills of Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrate flexibility to cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
- Demonstrate a willingness to remain current with current evidence-based nursing practices.
Experience:
- Two years of supervised nurse practice preferably in pediatrics, community, or public health prior to entry into school nursing.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive school health program on assigned school campus(es).
- Provide assessment and nursing care for all ill and injured students.
- Develop and implement nursing care plans (Individual Health Plan) with specific nursing interventions and outcomes.
- Utilize a district knowledge base for decision making in nursing practice.
- Use a systematic approach to problem solving in nursing practice.
- Contribute to the education of the student with special health needs by assessing the student, planning, and providing appropriate nursing care, and evaluating the identified outcomes of care.
- Use effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills.
- Collaborate with other school professionals, parents, and caregivers to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of students.
- Collaborate with members of the community in the delivery of health and social services, and utilize knowledge of community health systems and resources to function as a school community liaison.
- Assist students, families, and the school community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.
- Contribute to school health through innovations in nursing practice and participation in research or research-related activities.
- Identify the nursing role, promote quality of care, pursue continued professional development, and demonstrate professional conduct.
- Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for school district professional staff personnel.
- Attend and participate in department, campus, and district professional development, staff meetings, ARDs, parent conferences, and committees as assigned.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nursing and Health Services.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise, monitor, and evaluate LVN or nurse assistant(s) as assigned.

- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Ability to lift 150 lbs. with assistance if needed.
- Occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
- Occasional travel to other schools in the district.
- Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required.
