Job Title: Lead Mechanic – Bus Transportation Department
Reports To: Shop Foreman
Department: Transportation – Ector County ISD
Primary Purpose:
The Lead Mechanic is responsible for performing and supervising complex maintenance and repair tasks on the district’s bus fleet to ensure safe, reliable transportation for students and staff. This position supports the Shop Foreman by providing technical expertise, coordinating repair schedules, and ensuring adherence to safety and compliance standards.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with all required endorsements.
- State of Texas Vehicle Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within six months of empployment.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Expertise in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, as well as other vehicle sytems.
- Proficiency in diagnostic and troubleshooting equipment.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and regulatory guidelines.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Possession of personal tools necessary for vehicle maintenance and rep
Experience:
- Minimum of five years in vehicle maintenance, with at least two years working with bus fleets or heavy vehicles.
- Experience in a lead or supervisory role preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1.Vehicle Maintenance and Repair:
- Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance on the bus fleet, ensuring that all vehicles meet safety standards.
- Support the Shop Foreman by planning and coordinating repair schedules for the team,prioritizing urgent repairs to minimize downtime.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems,ensuring timely and accurate repairs.
2.Quality Control and Inspections:
- Conduct regular inspections and quality control checks on completed repairs to ensure adherence to district and state standards.
- Ensure all buses comply with state inspection requirements and coordinate annual inspections as mandated by the state.
3.Inventory and Recordkeeping:
- Assist in maintaining inventory levels for parts and supplies and ensure tools and equipment are well-organized and functional.
- Keep accurate records of all repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance performed on each vehicle.
4.Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols and district policies, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Provide guidance on safety practices to mechanic staff and reinforce safety standards within the transportation department.
5.Leadership and Support:
- Assist the Shop Foreman in providing direction and training to other mechanics as needed.
- Act as a resource for complex troubleshooting and offer technical support to the team.
- Provide updates on repairs, maintenance needs, and any safety concerns to the Shop Foreman.
6.Emergency Support:
- Respond to roadside service calls for bus breakdowns and assist in coordinating necessary towing or repairs to ensure safe transportation for students and staff.
- Support emergency maintenance tasks and assist with coordinating response efforts during severe weather or urgent transportation needs.
Working Conditions:
Environment:
- Work is performed in a transportation garage and outdoors, with exposure to noise, Fumes, and varying weather conditions.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting of heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to use hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and operate heavy machinery.
